MICHELSON HISTORICAL MARKER DID YOU KNOW the "c" in E=mc² came from Irvine? On behalf of the City of Irvine, I dedicated the new Michelson historical marker, in honor of renowned physicist Dr. Albert Michelson and his speed of light experiment. By bouncing light beams between mirrors at each end in a mile-long steel vacuum tube, he measured the time it took for light to travel a known distance (186,282 miles per second, to be precise). In 1931, Dr. Albert Einstein visited Dr. Michelson in Irvine. They discussed his experiment which helped develop Einstein's theory of relativity and famous E=mc² equation. You can visit the new historical marker located at 1920 Main Street, Irvine. For more information about Michelson in Irvine, click here.
FIELD OF VALOR You are invited to honor veterans, active duty, or fallen service members by visiting the flag display in our Fourth of July Field of Valor event, July 1-14, at the Irvine Civic Center Lawn. Each flag is three by five feet, on a 10-foot pole, and is individually illuminated. Members of the community have sponsored all flags, with proceeds benefiting the Irvine 2/11 Marine Adoption Committee. Take part in this special display as we thank those who selflessly serve or have served our country. For more information about the Irvine 2/11 Marine Adoption Committee, click here.
